Surface Level

A piece of collage, painting, and drawing, Towering Structures presents a complex formation of various buildings with people scattered around it. I purposefully manipulate the images, placing them both vertically and horizontally, transcending the conventional perception of buildings in a city. Composed of cropped images of buildings, this piece communicates the concept of ‘surface level,’ or the superficial in the early stages of human interaction. With only the exteriors of its buildings exposed, the formation suggests how at first, one only has the exterior of another person to make one’s judgement of the other. At times, one may not prefer to open oneself to the other person. This also represents a relationship in which one only shows certain sides of oneself. This piece therefore indicates the need to understand another person piecemeal in early stages of a relationship.
